Many good pros and cons have been mentioned. One of them has been "avoiding the gas fees". Fair point but have you also considered: 1️⃣ Gas fee to send funds from wallet to cex. 2️⃣ Transaction fee to trade in cex. 3️⃣ Gas fee to send funds from cex to wallet. A dex trade is usually more expensive but it only requires making 1 transaction instead of 3. The difference becomes increasingly less large. Also comfort plays a big role: Making one trade from your wallet that takes me 10 seconds vs the process of: - Withdraw from wallet - Wait 5 minutes for arrival - Trade on cex - Withdraw from cex - Wait 5 minutes for arrival A cex confirmation takes a lot longer than a blockchain transaction so these numbers are fairly accurate timing wise. "Yeah but I use a cex wallet" Also fair point but you are sacrificing security in the process. An option that's not even an option anymore when you deal with larger amounts of capital. 1️⃣ Your cex can get hacked 2️⃣ Your login can get hacked 3️⃣ Your pc can get hacked This doesn't happen daily ofcourse but it can happen. "Yeah but can't your wallet get hacked either?" If you are using a hardware wallet then no you can't. Not even when your entire pc is hacked. Well not by someone else at least. If you yourself connect and approve a transaction willingly it can ofcourse. It's not that hard to avoid a shady website btw. I've never had an incident in my entire carreer and that's 7 years. Almost every asset is available on a dex that you can get on a cex. Better yet, dexs actually have more pairs and assets (listing fees on a cex for a team are huge). There are a few pros however: - User interface is often better on a cex. - More liquidity on pairs. I'm used to dexs so interface is a non issue for any veteran. We only care about making the trade. More liquidity doesn't always mean a better trade. The difference can still be extremely minimal unless you are making a trade with 100k dollars. In most cases it comes down to this: If you are playing with really low capital than yeah, gas fees (on ethereum at least) are no option. So keep your funds on a cex. Security is also not a major issue because you are playing with low capital and it matters less when you get hacked. But in all other cases a dex is superior to me. The ease of trading from my highly secure and personal wallet is unmatched. Unless I really need to make a 100k trade happen and there's low liquidity I will quickly send it forth and back to a cex and back to my wallet. Fun fact: Many of these issues are actually already resolved through using $RVF. It's a dex aggregator that's connected to both other dexes and cexes. Need to make a trade on a cex? Use @RocketXexchange with your own wallet and it'll trade on a cex for you. User interface is also cex worthy. (I wrote a thread about it last year) So that kinda bridges the gap already. I've personally been using dexs for years already but mostly in combination with a cex from time to time. The differences however have been becoming smaller and smaller (mostly in favor of dexes). Hence why I haven't use a cex in months or maybe even a year already with the occasional exception. Except for on and off ramping fiat (deposit and withdrawals to bank account). I still use coinbase or kraken for that (cex). Still convinced on using a cex? 😅
